Our Musical Director

Professor Martin Fautley PhD; MPhil; MA; PGDip; BA[Hons]; CertEd

Martin Fautley has been Musical Director of Birmingham Savoyards for many years. In his day job, Professor Fautley is involved with numerous aspects of music education internationally. He combines his research into this with his keen interest in music-making in the community, hence his long standing involvement with Birmingham Savoyards. As MD he has conducted all of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas at least once! He has also been MD for a number of other shows, ranging from “Little Shop of Horrors” through to “Cabaret”. As a musician (his main instruments are Double Bass and Bass Guitar) he has performed in the pit for too many shows to list. He is also an orchestral musician, and in that role has performed at venues which include the Royal Albert Hall, Symphony Hall, King’s College Cambridge, and many others. During his graduate study at Cambridge, Martin was a chorister, singing Bass in Magdalene College Chapel Choir, where he performed regularly at services, in concerts, and on tour both nationally and internationally.

Martin’s broad musical background informs his work with Birmingham Savoyards, where he combines striving for high standards with having an enjoyable time, and developing the potential for all those in the society.

Birmingham Savoyards feel very privileged to have Martin as our Musical Director.
